By mapping an ontology of hymenopteran anatomy to existing insect anatomical ontologies we unlock the door to a treasure trove of information about gene sequences, gene expression, and phenotype descriptions in the descriptive literature. Three postdocs, two students, and a community of researchers will benefit from training in the utility of ontologies and from having a standardized, fully referenced controlled vocabulary. Interaction with the multidisciplinary HO board represents an invaluable opportunity for collaboration and insight, especially for students. A suite of open source tools will be available researchers in a broad array of disciplines.
